The Research for Resolution Measurement Methods of Digital Printer - with Emphasis on Ink-jet Printers

Abstract
The evaluation of the quality of the photographs is very important element to a photographer. As there were diversified measuring methods for analogue photos, the quality of the photographs can be measured in various aspects. However there was no previous study regarding the evaluation of the printed images of digital photographs although there was some regarding the evaluation of the input images. Therefore, the study on the evaluation of the resolution, which is the basic element to evaluate the printed images, is urgently needed.
In this study, the methods to measure digital printer's resolution were proposed focusing on 'the evaluation of ink-jet printer's resolution'. To measure the resolution, the specified digital test chart was produced using Adobe Photoshop. Such files were printed out using the methods that the printer manufacturer recommended. The printed test chart was analyzed for density changes using densitometer and objective measurement values for resolution were acquired. There are line pairs in the test chart; theoretically the density should be constant regardless of the thickness because the line pairs are constant and vividly distinguished. However because of the characteristics of ink and paper, there may be feathering phenomenon that printed ink intrudes white area. This feathering phenomenon makes the printed area wider so the total density will be increased. In this study, the extent of the feathering was calculated by measuring the density changes in the chart, because the feathering phenomenon is the most important variable in resolution.
The resolution measurement proposed in this study can be a standardized method in that it can be applied all kinds of ink-jet printers with various printing techniques. In this study, the ink-jet printers of three manufacturers (EPSON, CANON, HP) are measured and compared.
Ultimately, it can be applied to all printers as a resolution measuring standard and it can be a good guideline for image studies using digital printers in the future. Furthermore, it is expected to be a purchasing guideline for the people who want to buy a printer.
