Abstract
The purpose of this study is to propose the method to record the fingerprint image by removing the irregular color patterns that can be distracted to identify the fingerprints processed by powdering method.. Generally speaking, the fingerprints detected through the powdering method can be captured by camera or copied using the lift pad. However, it may cause physical damage on the fingerprints, and the identification thereof can be difficult due to the irregular color patterns. Though there are different methods for detecting such as the development of high quality lift pad and the background removal using image processing, these however could not solve the problem completely.
The Infrared Spectroscopic Imaging System, allowing the latent fingerprint imaging has its own shortcoming that cannot be used in the crime scene. However, the system proposed in this study can be used easily by anyone due to its similarity to the general camera use. You can record the fingerprints only with the background color patterns removed as an image in the crime scene. This system comprises with a digital camera equipped with an image sensor and an infrared band pass filter and infrared LED lightings to enhance the infrared sensitivity. This system is very effective in the fingerprints detected from the non-porous material. It is appropriate for use in the crime scene due to its portability. Comparing to the conventional methods used to separate the fingerprints from the background, it has the capability to record the image safely without causing damage and record the fingerprints without any special background processes after finishing the powdering process. It does not only enhance the accuracy of the fingerprints identification but also improves the initial investigation process.
